A legacy since 1855
Founded in 1855, the University Golf Club is one of the oldest and most distinguished sports clubs at the University of St Andrews — and proudly the oldest and largest student golf club in the world. With a rich tradition of success, it has welcomed generations of students, from beginners picking up a club for the very first time to golf scholars competing on the international stage.
That legacy of excellence and inclusivity continues today. Every member is given the chance to develop their game, build lifelong friendships, and experience golf at some of the most beautiful and historic courses here in St Andrews, the Home of Golf.
Golf and education – a historic synergy
Golf has been played in St Andrews since the 15th century, developing side by side with the founding of Scotland’s first university in 1413. For over six centuries, the town has been defined by these two great traditions — learning and golf — each shaping St Andrews’ reputation on the world stage.
The University Golf Club, established in 1855, grew out of this unique setting, where scholarship and sport have always been closely linked. Generations of students have studied in the shadow of the ancient University while playing on the same fairways that have tested champions for centuries. Today, that historic connection continues, as St Andrews remains a global centre of excellence, innovation, and tradition in both education and the game of golf.

Championing gender equality in golf
The University of St Andrews is proud to champion gender equality in golf as a signatory of The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter. Since making the pledge one quarter of our 450 members are women—and 70% of our beginner programme participants women—we are committed to ensuring that golf is open, welcoming, and enjoyable for all. Our goal is to inspire more women and girls to discover the game, to build confidence on the course, and to become lifelong participants in a sport that has deep roots here in St Andrews. As the Home of Golf, we are leading by example—celebrating tradition while shaping a more inclusive future for the game.

As a Saints Golf member, you’ll enjoy access to two unbeatable resources: the iconic seven courses of St Andrews Links and the outstanding practice facilities at the St Andrews Links Golf Academy. Just a stone’s throw from the Old Course and a short walk from town, the Academy is the ideal spot to develop your game with expert coaching and state-of-the-art technology. With the student Links Ticket, you can play the world-famous St Andrews courses throughout the year—giving you the perfect opportunity to enjoy, practice, and improve your golf at the very heart of the sport.

Full-time University of St Andrews students can apply for a Links Ticket, offering year-round access to all seven St Andrews Links courses—including the iconic Old Course.
With six courses within walking distance of university halls and all maintained to top standards year-round, no other UK university offers comparable playing opportunities.
