Women in Golf

Women now account for almost 70% of participants in our beginner programme, making Saints Golf one of the most active environments for women’s golf in UK higher education. At the Home of Golf, St Andrews has both an opportunity and a responsibility to help shape the future of the women’s game.

We are committed to supporting women at every stage of their journey—from first lesson to competitive golf, leadership and lifelong engagement as alumni.

The University of St Andrews is proud to champion gender equality in golf as a signatory of The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter.

Support helps fund:

  • Scholarships and participation grants
  • Beginner-friendly and social competitions
  • Female mentor pairing and ambassador programmes
  • Development of the Scottish Women’s University Golf League
  • Women’s networking, leadership and alumni engagement

Impact

Your investment creates opportunities for women to participate, compete, lead and inspire others. It strengthens an inclusive golfing community at St Andrews while helping shape the future of women’s golf across Scotland and beyond.

Joelle’s experience reflects how golf can transform a student’s time at St Andrews in ways that extend well beyond the course:

“Joining the University Golf Club in my first year had a greater impact on my university experience than I could have imagined. Taking part in events with women of all ages and abilities showed me that there is so much more to the sport than simply playing golf on the course. Regular weekly socials created opportunities for women who were just starting out to meet more experienced players in a welcoming and supportive environment. Seeing the Women’s Section grow year on year throughout my time at university has been incredibly rewarding and shows that the club is moving in the right direction. Beyond golf, the club also provided opportunities to volunteer and take on leadership roles, allowing me to develop valuable skills while giving back to the community. It has been fantastic to see so many more women taking an interest in the sport and feeling encouraged to get involved.”
